Thought Storm

Wed Oct 21, 2009, 11:22 AM
I realize my last journal was yesterday, but I feel this is new enough and great enough to warrant a two-in-a-row posting.

I like to keep the thoughts on "What if...?" possibilities flowing, so that on the rare days when a what-if dream becomes a could-be reality, it doesn't pass me by.

I just had one of those moments:

There have been a couple times in my life when my schedule's been so hectic that i just sleep when i can manage to, usually short naps at random times, sometimes going like that for days.

Junior year's independent study, grad party season after senior year, this spring/early summer at Abyss.
All of them have been times where I was in overdrive. Physically healthier, mentally sharper, emotionally more calm and in-tune.

It wasn't until this summer that I made the connection: sleep patterns.
I was studying random things, and i came across "polyphasic sleep".

It's the process of sleeping in several short bursts a day, instead of one long run.
And apparently, it's been used by some of histories greatest thinkers, and has a host of benefits including more waking hours in a day.

---Wikipedia: polyphasic sleep---> [link]

At first I was ecstatic. Good health, sharp mind, and more hours to use both? Yes please. Running the what-if of making it a way of life, however, I realized I wasn't in a point in my life where I could manage a schedule like that.
I run a business. I have to be at my counter 2:30pm - 10:00pm every day, and I can't just randomly nap there.

Through a long and confusing set of circumstances, however. I now have a volunteer/employee who is present every day, all day. I also have a car out back.

And so, I have made the descision:

---Everyman Cycle---> [link]

This is the Everyman pattern of polyphasic sleep. Starting tomorrow, I intend to try it, starting with a modification of lengthening the nap portions to one hour, then working gradually to the suggested 20 minutes.

And lastly, I intend to keep a detailed log of how it goes. From starting day tomorrow, to whenever I decide to stop.

Wish me luck, or possibly sweet dreams.

Images help me find and realize ideas. I look at hundreds of very different, contrasting images and I pinch details from them, rather like people who eat from other people’s plates.
