Lightning

As a boy he stared at thunderclouds
And walked out in the storm
He watched the arcing flashes
while the rest were inside warm

The dark skies stired and thundered
and he heard the thunder crash
He heard the heavens speaking
and he saw God's eyes flash

"Come in you fool!" they said to him
"Seek shelter from the rain!
For if the lightning touches you
you'll never wake again."

"You're wants are not like mine, my friends.
A home, a job, a wife...
To touch that spark of light divine
is all i want of life."

So every time a storm would brew
the man went out to stand.
He waited in the pouring rain
for the touch of Zeus's hand

One day a storm blew in to shame
even the fiercest of squall,
a maelstrom formed of legend,
and he heard its mystic call

He grabbed his bike to follow it
and chase his shining vision.
He'd chase the heavens till his dying breath.
His eyes shone with decision.

He rode through sheets of pouring rain
and suddenly, a flash!
He'd cought the spark of light divine
and felt it's sonorous crash.

When the storm had cleared the people came
and saw him lying dead
they stood confused and saddened
and in remorse one said:

"Alas the poor fool now shall never
see another dawn.
He wasted life on thunderclouds
and now that life is gone"

They stared off in the distance
and they heard the thunder crash.
They didn't hear the heavens speak
or witness God's eyes flash

They didn't see divinity
in the lighning's shining arc
they only saw a thunderstorm
They couldn't see that spark

Though he followed clouds and gave his life
for nothing it would seem,
how can any life be wasted
when that life has lived it's dream?
This is by far my masterpiece, and very close to my heart.

EDIT: OCT 9 2011
I'm not sure the above still fits. It's certainly as close to my heart as ever, maybe closer. Also, as of late 2008, I actually was struck by lightning, thus fulfilling a childhood dream.

I'm not sure it's my best work anymore though. Definitely the hardest, Lightning is nothing like my other writing. I think that's what made it special.

there is a typo: When the storm had cleard the people came
and saw him lying dead.
I do believe that an 'e' belongs between the 'r' and 'd' of the word "cleard"

But i must say.. I love this poem very much. A master Piece I concur.
